Magen David
Shield of David

The Magen David (Shield of David) emblem was used in biblical times for decoration, but it had no special Jewish meaning before the Middle Ages. It was first used officially in 1354, when the Jewish Community in Prague was granted its own flag. By the nineteenth century it was taken up as the symbol of the Zionist movement and today it represents both Israel and all the Jewish people.

In the center is a traditional graphic representation of the Chinese character, pronounced "shou", which wishes its wearer "a long life". Since designing this piece, it has become apparent that Chinese people also have an association with this six-pointed star: to them it means "shun" or things going smoothly".
