SILVERCUT MAN

"Spirit WaWa"

For centuries it has been the practice of people in remote agrarian villages in China to stick papercut figures on new houses, or to put them up on rice paper window panes at times of difficulty such as during illness or drought. They date from a time when superstition was rife, when the village dwellers hoped they could call on these little figures to intercede with powerful spirits on their behalf. It is the tradition for the most senior female elder to do the cutting.

This papercut (or "wawa", "baby") comes from Shanxi and features a "shou" or longevity symbol on its chest, below which is a "shuangxi" or "double happiness."
