Xinjiang

is the largest and probably most fascinating province of China. Below are some scenes from landscapes and ecosystems of the Tarim desert.

Sand dunes in the lower desert are slowly covering ancient and culturally famous Poplar trees.

Salination is the most serious threat to agriculture in the Taklamahan desert. The white spots in the centre indicate salt extrusions.

The famous silk road has once past these red mountains near Turpan. The silk roads had followed trails, which provided enough water and food for the camels and traders. Over the centuries it shifted as the water resources became more scarce. Today it would be almost impossible to herd a group of heavy loaded camels through the desert.
