Succulents of South China

Succulent plants in this section of our site are species which are surviving the dry, cold, and sunny winters with the help of tubers or succulent stems.

Among the species with succulent stems are many of the large aroids and even epiphytic orchids especially of the Genus Dendrobium, which shed their leaves in winter and burst out in dramatic flowers before the rainy season starts in April.

But also banana species like the rare and extraordinary beautiful dwarf species "Golden Lotus" is hibernating in winter. All its leaves weather away and a glorious flower is produced by the nutrient rich corm. The golden flower opens petal after petal for one year, which is extraordinary in horticulture.

The more unusual tuber plants are the Phallus flowers which shoot out from their tuber to magnificent shape and size.

Our most outstanding and largest cortex plants, however, are the "Mountain Turtles" and "Mountain Buffalos". They can grow to more than 100 kg and if you get a seed of them growing in your garden or home, the plant will accompany you through your entire life.

Enjoy these pages of largely rare species and thank you for visiting us.
