The mango species protection idea of Rene Rene Andersen fell in love with the magnificent mango fruits and trees of the RFFF mountains. But he got concerned when he learned that 2 out of the 4 local species are existing in the area as only 1 single tree each. The farmers had protected them in midst of rubber plantations. ![]() Lone mango tree of the species locally called "chicken shit" mango for its small fruits. Note that all land around the tree has been converted into rubber plantations only recently. Rene purchased 5 ha of secondary growth and clear cut shifting cultivation area from the local farmers and has tasked the local RFFF Steering Team to convert all clear cut areas of his land into a mango forest composed of the 4 local species and other flora. ![]() Part of Rene's forest area: a patch of secondary growth and clear cut areas. The cleared areas will become the mango life gene bank. This way Rene has not only substantially contributed to the protection of an important tropical fruit tree but he also proudly owns the largest in situ gene bank of mangos of China. Moreover, we all agree that the fruits of the smallest species, only the size of a small plum, has a most extraordinary taste and may be marketable as "party mangoes" in the near future. ![]() Rene and the farmer who has sold his land to him and is now managing Rene's mango gene bank in front of the giant old mango tree: the last of its kind. home

Your
ecologically friendly production of rain forest plants:
Landuse in Yunnan is largely designed by ethnic minority people from more than 20 distinctly different ethnic communities. Wherever possible, and mainly in the fertile lowlands, rice fields are forming the landscape. In the mountains, shifting cultivation is predominant, although it is now gradually given up for increased cash crop production. Agricultural industry has taken its toll and large mountain areas are under sever environmental stress by destructive ways of growing crops like sugar cane, corn, rubber, pine apple, and even the famous Puer tea. Yunnan is also rich in traditional herbal medicine, which is one of the agricultural crops in some areas. Although the majority of herbs is still collected in the wild. This forest protection scheme addresses the issues around forest loss by simply saving forests from further destruction.
